FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We've compiled a list of the most commonly asked questions by prospective customers to help better you understand what we have to offer.

1.

What are the main types of locks?

Locks are separated into categories based on their locking mechanism. There are five basic locks: Deadbolts, Cylinder locks, Mortise locks, Rim locks, and Padlocks.

2.

How do locksmiths open doors?

Locksmiths have several tools that help them to open a door. The most common tool is a key. If the key can open the lock, they can unlock it and gain entry. If they do not have the key, they might try to pick or bump the lock. This requires special training and tools that are not widely available or legal for most locksmiths.

3.

Can Key4u make keys from a lock?

Yes. We can copy a lock and make additional keys that work with your required lock

4.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

No, not all locks can be picked. Some locks are designed to be more resistant to picking, and these are typically found on higher-end products or in commercial settings.

Yes, this is possible. We can rekey all of your locks to use the same key, making it more convenient. This is a common request for people who have just moved into a new home.

At Key4u, we accept all major credit and debit cards as well as cash. We cannot take personal checks due to the nature of the services we provide. We offer to bill for commercial jobs and will accept corporate cheques from repeat customers. We need a credit, debit, or cash payment to establish a good faith business relationship.

Changing locks entails taking the existing locks (lock, knob/lever, latch, and strike) and replacing them with new ones. Rekeying a lock removes the old lock cylinder ( leaving everything else intact) and replaces it with a new one so your old key will no longer operate. You mostly just want your locks rekeyed when there is a key that you want to continue using or you have lost your only key and don’t want to replace the locks.

We can make keys for most locks. We have a wide variety of keys in stock, and we can also order specific keys if needed.

We work on all types of locks, from simple deadbolts to complex electronic locks. We can also install new locks or replace old ones.

A standard lock is typically installed in the entry door to a residence or business. The goal is security, not necessarily absolute security. High-security locks are installed on doors that must offer very high protection against forced entry. They are often found at businesses (banks, jewelry stores, etc.) that require very high levels of security.

A keyed lock requires a key to be turned to unlock the door. A keyless lock does not require a key at all.

A deadbolt is installed in the door to the exterior. The lock aligns with a mortise cut in the door. A key turns a cam mechanism inside the lock, moving the bolt away from or towards the door to allow access. The bolt will not move unless there is an appropriate key.

Locks can be rekeyed in several ways, depending on the type of lock and what it is being used for. To simplify this answer for our purposes, we’ll say that there are two different types of locks: cylinder locks and pin tumbler locks. A cylinder lock operates as a gate with pins that retract when the key is turned; a pin tumbler lock operates with two sets of pins that interlock together when the correctly-sized key is inserted
